Huy Pottery Workshop – Preserving the Legacy of Bát Tràng Ceramics

Meet Duc: A Legacy of Passion

Born and raised amidst the rhythmic hum of the potter's wheel in Bát Tràng, Duc’s connection to ceramics is lifelong. After exploring other paths, he was drawn back to his family's legacy, realizing his true passion was here, in the clay.

Today, Duc leads the workshop, blending time-honored techniques with modern innovation. He believes crafting beautiful ceramics requires four elements: passion, creativity, experience, and skill. For him, each miniature figurine isn't just an object; it's a piece of Vietnamese culture designed to harmonize with the living art of bonsai, aquascapes, and Zen gardens.

"My commitment is to preserve the art of Bát Tràng while ensuring it evolves," Duc shares. "Through dedication, I want to create pieces that you will cherish and that bring a sense of peace to your space."

The Soul of the Craft: Our Bat Trang Clay

The foundation of every great ceramic piece is the clay itself. In Bát Tràng, artisans have perfected the use of local clay, a natural, mineral-rich resource trusted for generations. This is the very earth that gives our figurines their unique character and resilience.

The Secret of Our Clay:

  • Natural & Bonsai-Safe: Sourced responsibly and legally from trusted local deposits, our clay is 100% natural and free from harmful additives. It is completely safe for your bonsai, soil, and aquarium life.
  • Exceptional Durability: When fired at temperatures over 1200°C (2192°F), this dense clay transforms into an incredibly durable ceramic. Your figurines will resist fading, cracking, and water damage, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use year-round.
  • Earthy Tones: The natural mineral content provides the warm, earthy hues you see in our finished pieces, ensuring each figurine complements the organic beauty of your plants and stones.

Crafting Excellence: Our 9-Step Process

The creation of each figurine is a meticulous nine-step journey, a testament to our artisans' dedication. This process ensures that every piece meets our high standards of quality and detail.

  1. Inspiration: The journey begins with an idea drawn from Asian culture, nature, and daily life.
  2. Model Sculpting: A master artisan sculpts the original detailed model by hand.
  3. Mold Creation: A plaster mold is crafted from the model to ensure precision and consistency.
  4. Clay Preparation: The natural clay is refined into a liquid slip, ready for casting.
  5. Casting: The slip is poured into the mold. As water is absorbed, a clay shell forms.
  6. Refining & Detailing: Skilled hands meticulously clean seam lines and refine details, making each piece unique.
  7. Assembly: For complex designs, individual parts are carefully joined together.
  8. Drying: The figurines are slowly and carefully dried to prevent cracking.
  9. Firing: The pieces are fired in modern gas kilns at temperatures over 1200°C (2192°F), ensuring exceptional durability and a permanent finish.
